"This is an excellent book for both parent and teacher alike. I found it read well and flows easily and really puts you into "their world" (the dyslexic child). Dyslexia is a complex disability endured by a third of children in the UK – with no two children affected alike. But it need not be a barrier to success, as the above list of high achievers (representing just a handful of famous people known to have dyslexia) shows.

Until we understand what it is like to see the world through a dyslexic child’s eyes, it is very hard to know how best to help the child cope with and manage his or her dyslexia. The Secret Life of the Dyslexic Child bridges this information gap.

Author Dr Frank, an educational psychologist and family therapist, is himself dyslexic and thus able to give a unique insight into the frustrations and fears of dyslexic children as well as propose strategies for managing the condition and achieving success.

Dr Frank’s observations and programme are based on years of working with children and families dealing with behavioural and learning problems. He explains that dyslexia is more than just a reading problem and that, in fact, many of the methods now used by parents and teachers may be   making matters worse by reinforcing the child’s fears and frustrations.

The Secret Life of the Dyslexic Child is divided into 4 accessible sections:

  • First Part: helps the reader to understand the child’s internal struggles
  •  Second Part: invites the reader to experience the way the secret world of dyslexia works
through a series of exercises and activities
  •  Third Part: explains the diagnosis of dyslexia in a practical and positive way
  • Fourth Part: offers a skill-building programme that can lead to lifelong success

The Secret Life of the Dyslexic Child will enable readers to appreciate the emotional struggles the dyslexic child faces, help dyslexic children discover their own strengths and encourage all dyslexics to develop greater self-esteem and to aim high.
